WebApr 22, 2013 · On the north bank of the River Tyne, the Wylam Wooden Waggonway opened in 1748. It later had iron rails used by Hedley's early steam locomotives before closing in 1867. It ran from Wylam Colliery to staiths at Lemington. Most of its route was used by the Scotswood, Newburn and Wylam Railway in 1875. WebMickley Coal Company had built a firebrick works at the colliery in 1870 and it continued to flourish. In 1927 eighteen people were employed in the brickyard. There was a Schofield brick press which produced 45,000 common bricks per week.
